Soft Reset

The reset will restore all the phone’s settings to factory default and delete all user info. You need to use the dialer to enter this code.

*#7370#

Hard Reset

Hard reset only works if you had previously updated the phone to v20. Please make backup before applying this type of reset, since it will restore the phone’s settings as well as erasing all the data in the phone memory.

  1. Switch off the phone.
  2. Press GREEN + RED + CAMERA + ON simultaneously until you see the “Select Country” option.

Note:

  1. The default password is 12345. You need to press and hold the key until the number appear.
  2. Please do not confuse “revert to factory settings” with soft reset. “Revert to factory settings” can be achieved from Menu > Settings > Phone > Phone mgmt. > Factory settings or *#7870# code, and will only restore the phone to its factory setting without deleting data.

  2. mathew says:

What do you do if you can’t even turn off the damned phone?

Mine is stuck on the ‘whitescreen’ – a white background, with the word NOKIA on it. No going forward, no going backward, just sits there, chewing its battery.

The whole phoen is under TWO WEEKS OLD, so if anyone’s reading this and considering buying this phone, DON’T!

  3. posh says:

what should i do if all the predownloaded videos wont play anymore. it says “unable to play clip”.. i just had it upgraded to the latest software. then it didnt play any more.

    • Selinap says:

The very first thing that I do after upgrading to the latest software is, I hard formatted the phone. I am not sure about the videos, but, I had several issues with other components. Thus, hard formatting the phone may solve your problem.

  4. Marta says:

i.e : you have 300 song in playslist, after a few days, only 125 left, things like that..sometimes pictures is also gone@corrupted. formatted the mmc several time, still the same..

and when surfing the internet, it tends to hang, stuck and cant do nothing about it.

    any solutions?

  7. Jess says:

My phone isn’t locking properly.. If I lock it, the screen stays on, using all my battery life in a few hours. I’ve tried a soft reset to no avail.. If I did a hard reset, do you think it would help? And if so, how do I back up my data?

  8. meghan says:

my phone didn’t lock properly and drained all my battery but the screen has now froze and wont unlock. i have tried to hard reset but it will not work. any help?

  9. sadiq says:

  10. Mark says:

This phone is the biggest pile of dogshite, I have had nothing but trouble since it came out of the box! Go the iPhone!!

    • Selinap says:

But, I don’t have any problem with this phone.

      • sadiq says:

        • steve says:

I have had my nokia 5800 for over 6mths now …it has given me no hassles till now… I think its a virus tho cos it seems to refuse to let me delete any aftermarket apps I no longer want on my fone

gonna try this hard format thingy after backing up my tel numbers tonight … wish me luck

Nokia btw wanted to keep my cell for 5 days to “fix the software problem” bunch of wankers who know nothing anyway …who in this day and age can leave his cell for a week !!! Idiots

  11. mathew says:

selinap, you are either very lucky, very undemanding, or are just being paid to say nice things about the phone.

There’re no other possible explanation, given the complaints here and everywhere else.

Personally, I don’t have the serious problems others here have, but I am absolutely outraged that synchronisation with outlook is so poor. Given what I read on this front before buying it, I feel Nokia engaged in false advertising.

My next phone is therefore unlikely to be a Nokia – they have lost my trust.

  12. mathew says:

Glad to hear it. Do note that I gave three possible reasons you were being nice about the phone, not one.

  13. FRANKIE RAY says:

THE HARD AND SOFT RESET DESCRIPTION IS WRONG…

    This is right:

    Normal Reset (Soft Reset): *#7780#

Complet Reset (Hard Reset): *#7370# Code 12345

    • EXUGO says:

Completely right!!, the description is all wrong, due to this i made a hard reset not a soft one :@. I just wanted soft reset, and so.. why isn’t anyone saying nothing about it ?? WTF!!

    • Selinap says:

@Frankie Ray: The alternative to *#7780# is the Menu > Settings > Phone > Phone mgmt. > Factory settings. It will only restore the factory settings. It is not called soft reset.

The soft reset *#7370# will reset the phone to its factory settings and delete all user info.

The hard reset explained in this tutorial is like doing format C: on your computer. It will delete everything in the phone including installed softwares, and restore factory settings.

  14. Amalething says:

Selinap, I don’t believe you haven’t had any issues with your phone. Maybe you just have lower expectations of a pioneering phone.

I should point out, this is the best selling consumer phone right now, so there will be plenty of people with plenty of phones. For each person complaining in forums, there must plenty more satisfied with there phone. However, I know 4 other friends with this phone, all have issues with it.

I am today on my second 5800, and in the first hour I’ve had endless hanging, finally using the hard reset (and after reading these posts, plan on formatting my memory which sounds to be the problem).

Although I sound anti-5800, I love this phone. It offers far far more than its competitors. All those comparing the 5800 to the iPhone would be like comparing a Ford Mondeo to a 3 Series BMW.

I pay £18 p/month for this phone with Virgin. As soon as I can afford £40 p/month for the iPhone, I’ll be sure to tell you if it performs any better.

  15. mathew says:

“lower expectations” was the second of my possible reasons Selinap doesn’t have any problems with his phone.

Reading these comments, I realise that maybe I’m lucky. Hardware-wise, my phone works well.

What I can’t beleive is that I still need to synch and carry around my PalmVx – TEN YEAR OLD TECH – to have well-organised tasks, contacts and notes!

When you go to Nokia’s own blog, you see people asking for category synch for over 3 years, and Nokia not doing anything about it, not even responding. Incredible.

    • Selinap says:

For me, the 5800 tasks, contacts and notes are good enough, even though I really hope that it could sync with Thunderbird since I am not using Windows.

  16. Amalething says:

Mathew, I can’t say I’ve ever come across a phone which does handle one’s organisational needs.

I’ve decided one though, I’ll be keeping this phone until Virgin release a new/upgraded Nokia on a similar tarif to mine and then complain to Virgin about these faults until they exchange. The adviser at Virgin didn’t take much persuading to replace my phone and stated they would be happy to keep replacing it until my problem is solved. So either there having many problems, or they’re very relaxed and eager to please customers.

  17. dennis says:

Hard reset instructions are hard to follow

  18. sahrin says:

    • Selinap says:

hi every one saw many frustrated faces . i was one too when i bought one 6 months back .
1 .the phone wont turn on after i switch off.
    2. i did firmware update and lost all the 300 songs and videos .
    3. homescreen contact and dialpad wont work .
    i became f%&*&* up man !

at last found out the reasons . 1. The phone turns on if u remove the mmc card befor restarting. the phone tries to install all the applications before turning on so as to make it ready to use . removing the mmc the phone on after loading only phone mem applications .
    2. the song file get corrupted . you can find the files each license 1kb total 300kb in many sites depending on country. google it put those in right folder your music will play.3. DId a hard reset call+End+camera and turn on !

  34. wolfrayet says:

hi all.. my 5800 works fine most of the time especially after upg to V 40….!

but i have old apps thats not working or crappy.. i can’t remove it so any ideas wat to do..?

if i do a m.card format using the usb data cable will that be ok coz i have no memory card reader ?

i thought i format the mcard then do a hard format..?

will that return my phone to default setting and apps and remove all the apps i have added ?

plus any ideas if skype is available for this phone..?

    • Selinap says:

@wolfrayet: You can format the memory card using the phone.

How to format the memory card using Nokia 5800 phone.
      1. press the white menu button.
      2. Select “Applications”.
      3. Select “File Manager”.
      4. Double-click on “E: Memory Card”.
      5. Select “Options”.
      6. Select “Memory Card Options” and then “Format”.

Please note that formatting the memory card will erase everything on it. Hence, do not forget to perform backup initially.

Personally, I do not believe that you need to format the memory card before performing phone hard format.

  35. Mussette says:

my nokia 5800 is not saving the call log, i dont recieve messages unless i send one…when i do i start recieving text messages. • Selinap says:

@Mussette: Try to upgrade the latest software version which is 40. Then, perform hard format. I hope that it will solve your problem.

      • Mussette says:

I’m from Puerto Rico, so the software version available here..according to my phone is V20, Ive tried everything, I cant reset it, cause it wont let me…it says code error, and I havent changed it.

    • Ken says:

I have same problem, only solution I can see on other forums is to do a hard reset. I will use it till contract runs out and then thats it no more nokia after 15 years of buying only nokia. So dumb that the biggest maker of mobile phones released this phone with so many problems. First firmware version was a joke used us all as guinea pigs. Should not have to do a hard reset, how many times do you have to reinstall the operating system in a computer, S60 just not up to been a smart phone, the N97 have the same probs as the 5800. It can do a lot of things well but the call log problem, music player not refreshing the library, real player cant multi task, the browser is slow and no kinetic scrolling, can’t change themes without causing phone to restart, firmware updates take forever to roll out, all these bogus websites saying how good the phones are but remember these guys change their phone every few months so any problems they never see and give a bullshit review, N97 is shit phone and it was hailed as a flagship phone, N900 same and thing is too big for your pocket, all a joke by nokia and hence they are loosing market share. Would be very surprised out of the eight million 5800’s sold I would safely say half will not but their next phone from nokia. If other phone makers (which I doubt) have the same problems as nokia then the hardware and software is not there to make relaible smart phones, I think it is but nokia have been lazy and dropped their game.

  36. sadiq says:

my fellow frustrated 5800 users, hope u guys have gotten new fones by now. well i havnt either, still tryna make sense out of this nokia blunder. im so pissed at nokia that i cant even throw the fone away cos of the money i used to buy the fone. anyways, i need help, i cant seem to use the dialler or check my contacts. it still freezes, restarts on its own etc. any new ideas guys? thanks a million. and yes the nokia care here in my city is charging me a hell lot of money to fix my damned fone. imagine!

  37. sadiq says:

aha! i almost forgot, i did the harf reset a while ago, now the fone shows t=mobile on the boot screen, i cant update firmware usin pc suite or from the fone. its askin 4 server profile? any ideas pls. one love.

  38. Agustin says:

i need to reset but i forgot the code, please tell me, how can i do, thanks

  39. kkdd says:
